APS India for German study: plan it early.

If your school or higher-education credentials were earned in India, an APS certificate is almost always required for admission and the German student-visa process, subject to official exemptions.

Who usually needs APS?

The German missions in India state that applicants with Indian school-leaving certificates, prior semesters in India or Indian degrees almost always need APS. This includes many bachelor’s and master’s applicants.

Common official exemptions

  • PhD or postdoctoral study.
  • A scholarship from German or EU public funds.
  • A non-German degree studied in Germany.
  • A foreign qualification that is not Indian, such as a British degree.
  • Certain international school qualifications, including the International Baccalaureate.

Build APS into the application plan

  1. Check the official exemption list against your exact education history.
  2. Read the APS process and document list before your programme deadline.
  3. Check whether the university also needs uni-assist or a VPD.
  4. Do not confuse APS with admission: the university still evaluates academic fit.
  5. Use the correct student-visa checklist for your German mission or VFS jurisdiction.
Important distinction. A university can ask for programme-specific documents beyond APS. The official programme record and the visa checklist are separate sources.
